HOCHoben
Winter enjoyment
Away from the hustle and bustle, winter in Mallnitz shows its most beautiful side: quiet, snow-covered, and full of alpine experiences in the winter holiday at HOCHoben.
When the landscape is wrapped in snow and ice, it’s time for skiers and snowboarders. The charming ski areas Ankogel and Mölltaler Glacier are easily accessible by the free ski bus directly from Mallnitz, making a ski holiday in Mallnitz particularly attractive – ideal for those who want to experience winter camping in Austria in a ski area. The ski area in Mallnitz is also quick and easy to reach. In addition, the Gastein ski area (Stubnerkogel) is only 11 minutes by train away.
Families are also well catered for: younger guests can practice their first turns on the in-house snow hill with magic carpet or enjoy plenty of winter fun while sledding. Cross-country skiing enthusiasts will also get their money’s worth: over 25 kilometers of perfectly groomed trails lead through the Tauerntal into the Seebachtal – classic or skating. The access point is located right on our doorstep.
Winter holiday HOCHoben – sporty, relaxed, and right in the heart of the mountains.
Tobogganing
Fun for all ages
Tobogganing
Tobogganing lets us all feel like children again for a few hours. At the end of the Tauern Valley lies the 4 km-long toboggan run. Apart from the toboggan taxi, no vehicles are allowed here. Fun for young and old is guaranteed here. Sledges can, of course, also be hired. The Tauernbad site also features an ice rink and a curling rink, which can also be used as an asphalt curling rink in summer.

Jetzt entdeckenSkiing and ski touring
Ski touring in powder snow
Skiing and Ski Touring
A total of 29 tours covering 164 km and 34,734 meters of elevation gain can be completed here, suitable for beginners to advanced ski tourers. The ski touring areas of Ankogel, Häusleralm, Tauerntal, and Dösental are considered snow-reliable and offer excellent powder snow. In spring, the region is known for its perfect firn (corn snow) conditions.
Directly from our campsite, you can start a tour to the Häusleralm. This is an ideal beginner’s tour, with ascent and descent along former ski slopes and through forested terrain. For this reason, the route is largely considered avalanche-safe. The ski touring area at Ankogel is also suitable for beginners and those transitioning from alpine skiing.
With the Ankogel cable car, you can reach high alpine terrain directly and from there undertake more challenging tours to Radeckscharte or to the Kleine or Große Ankogel. The Tauerntal valley is also well known, featuring destinations such as Romatenspitze, Hagener Hütte, and Geiselkopf. Here, tours of all difficulty levels are available, though they should be attempted only by experienced alpine ski mountaineers.
In the Dösental valley, you’ll find lesser-known tours leading to the Arthur-von-Schmidhaus, the Maresen, or the Säuleck. As always, alpine knowledge and experience are essential. Beginners are strongly advised to consult a mountain guide or consider joining a guided tour.

The slopes of Ankogel invite you to enjoy fantastic descents into the valley. The sunny south-facing slope is a popular destination for freeriders, and many have learned to ski at the Köfelelift. The Mölltal Glacier is just around the corner and, with 330 operating days per year, is Carinthia’s only glacier ski resort.
For children, we have recently added a slope with a magic carpet lift directly at the campsite. By train, the ski area in the Gastein Valley can be reached within minutes, with the Stubnerbahn located directly at Bad Gastein station.
Nearby ski areas:
- Ankogelbahn (4.5 km) – direct ski bus from HOCHoben to the valley station
- Mölltal Glacier (23 km) – direct ski bus from HOCHoben to the valley station
- Gastein cable cars – Stubnerkogel (reachable by ski bus and train to Bad Gastein, approx. 11 minutes to the valley station)
HOCHoben Tip: Since our campsite is also open in winter, we aim to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Our main building features a drying room for wet clothing as well as ski and cross-country boots.
Ankogel
The traditional alpine ski mountain Ankogel has developed into a popular freeride insider tip—and for good reason. Sparkling powder slopes high above the “pearl of the national park,” the mountaineering village of Mallnitz, await you. Carinthia’s longest and most snow-reliable descent, extra-wide powder slopes, diverse freeride terrain, and new, charming programs make this area truly special, surrounded by the magnificent nature of the national park.
Mölltal Glacier
The glacier express and the Eisseebahn comfortably take you up to the Eissee panoramic restaurant, located in the heart of Carinthia’s only glacier ski area. Whether enjoying food and drinks on the sunny terrace or taking the chairlift up to the summit (3,122 m), the Mölltal Glacier is always a highlight of any holiday.
HOCHoben Tip: Summer skiing at the Mölltal Glacier – depending on snow and weather conditions, up to 3 slopes remain open for skiing!

Breathtaking scenery in the Hohe Tauern
Snowshoeing and Winter Hiking
Winter sports don’t always have to mean stress, hustle, and adrenaline rushes. While others take ski lifts up the mountains or carve daring freeride routes down into the valley, you can set off on a winter hike and enjoy peace and romance in a deeply snow-covered landscape.
Whether on snowshoes or winter hiking trails, you’ll immerse yourself in nature and follow the tracks of wildlife.
With or without snowshoes—on cleared winter hiking and walking paths through a beautiful natural landscape—you can easily reach cozy alpine huts at any time, even without special equipment. However, once you put on snowshoes, the experience becomes even more exciting. You can venture deeper into the breathtaking winter scenery of the Hohe Tauern.
Join a ranger and follow them to see ibex or observe red deer feeding—an unforgettable experience you will certainly never forget.
In Mallnitz, wonderful tours await you. The winter hiking trail into the Seebach Valley, for example, is easy to walk (approx. 3 hours). The winter hiking trail into the Tauerntal Valley is also highly recommended; at 6.1 km, it is slightly shorter but just as exciting.

Peaks and alpine pastures await you
Hiking and Mountaineering
Setting out into the mountains with a backpack is one of the best things you can do for both body and mind. Easy valley walks are just as possible in Mallnitz as challenging tours in the higher alpine regions. The village itself lies in the Mallnitz high valley, open to the south at an elevation of 1,200 meters, surrounded by eight peaks over 3,000 meters and more than 20 additional summits just below 3,000 meters.
In addition to around 150 km of hiking trails across three different altitude levels, the Hohe Tauern region offers over 100 three-thousand-meter peaks just waiting to be climbed. Beginners can take their first steps with certified mountain guides, while experienced climbers will also find demanding routes to the summits.
HOCHoben Tip: A hike to Stappitzer See and Schwussnerhütte – ideal for children
Take the hiking bus directly to the Ankogel valley station. From there, you have the perfect starting point for a hike into the Seebach Valley. At the beginning, you’ll find a beautiful recreational area with a spacious playground and barbecue spots right by the Seebach stream — your children will love it.
The trail continues to Stappitzer See, a natural gem used by many migratory birds as a stopover, making it ideal for birdwatching. The Mallnitz educational trail begins here and leads through shaded forest all the way to Schwussnerhütte, where you can stop for refreshments before heading back toward HOCHoben.
A special recommendation is also the wildlife tour “Tracking the Red Deer.” The hiking bus takes you to Schwussnerhütte, where the tour begins together with a national park ranger. You will be guided through breathtaking landscapes featuring ancient mountain forests, bearded vultures, and the largest chamois population in the entire national park.
HOCHoben Tip: Explore the gorge hiking trail
From Hengstenbergweg, the Rabisch Gorge can be reached on foot in about 30 minutes. The trail passes impressive waterfalls on the way to Groppenstein Gorge, which continues toward Obervellach. This is a particularly popular experience on hot days. Entry to Groppenstein Gorge is included with the Carinthia Card. For those who want more gorge hiking, Raggaschlucht is also highly recommended (also included with the Carinthia Card).
HOCHoben Tip: Explore the valley circular trail
Starting directly from HOCHoben via Hengstenbergweg, unforgettable tours can be undertaken. The Mallnitz valley circular trail leads with minimal elevation gain in a loop through the three side valleys of Mallnitz: Tauern Valley, Seebach Valley, and Dösen Valley. This route is ideal for an initial exploration of the Mallnitz surroundings.
HOCHoben Tip: Use the hiking bus in Mallnitz
Guests of Alpine Pearls member accommodations can use it free of charge, ensuring the flexibility needed to reach the starting points of numerous hiking tours. More information is available at the reception.

Hiking and petting zoo in one
Tauernlama
Hiking is often associated with reaching the summit, following the motto “faster, further, higher.” However, it doesn’t always have to be trail running or high alpine mountaineering. How about a relaxed hike with the Tauern llamas?
A llama would never think of breaking records. These animals are not interested in getting to the destination quickly or standing on the highest peak. Llamas enjoy a calm, relaxed pace and have neither urgent appointments nor a fixed schedule. So anyone who wants to go on a hike with llamas should bring patience and time.
A lush green alpine meadow or a beautiful view can easily lead to a longer break! But be careful: the calm nature of the animals is contagious ;-) Just switch off, relax, and let the animals guide you. Stress and haste are not welcome here. Llamas are very sensitive and can sense the mood of their companions. Sudden movements and loud noises can easily startle them — so anyone who wants to build a friendship with llamas must first earn their trust. Isn’t that a wonderful lesson for all of us?
Llama hikes are suitable for the whole family. Whether it’s an evening village walk or a longer tour into the Tauerntal, hiking with llamas is especially fun for children. Llama hikes are also available for birthdays, as well as club and school excursions.
The Tauern llamas are looking forward to welcoming you!
